Coats of arms were traditionally passed paternally, meaning that any son could claim and display his family’s coat of arms. Around the fifteenth century, arms began including special marks that indicated which son chronologically bore the arms of the family. The family arms were passed in this fashion unless a specific circumstance of marriage changed the design of the family arms. In this case, the altered arms were then passed down.
