Arms in Pretence

Arms in pretence were the combined arms of a husband with a coat of arms and his wife who was a heraldic heiress. A small version of the shield from the wife’s arms was placed over the center of the shield from her husbands. The offspring of this marriage were able to quarter the arms of their mother and father, but only the married couple themselves would display their arms in pretence.
