Gaming Counter with the Arms of Talbot impaling Clopton

Title

Gaming Counter with the Arms of Talbot impaling Clopton

Description

This counter is part of a set made for Henry Talbot and his wife Catherine Clopton of Stratford-on-Avon.  They married in 1725.

Mr. Talbot worked for the East India Company for many years, primarily in China, and even making several voyages to Canton.  He worked his way up from a clerk to becoming responsible for the cargo, making a small fortune for himself.  Mr. Talbot enjoyed Chinese art, filling his house with various items and going so far as to spend his entire private trade allowance on paintings during a trip to China. Even after his final voyage to China, Mr. Talbot still acquired art from China, even getting famed Chinese artist Chitqua to create several pieces for him.
